Women Can Love Football Too!

I believe that women who hate football only hate it because either it takes their husbands time or they don’t understand the game. Understanding the game is 90% of the battle. Who doesn’t enjoy a little competition? Make it fun by placing fun bets. Girls, you can bet a new pair of shoes but remember your guy may go for a new golf club! My husband is not into football really so I hear what some men hear, “Get off the couch and do something.” I have my computer on tracking my Fantasy League and the TV on watching the games, flipping channels. So ladies, if you’re willing, at least try to learn the game.

To you guys out there, women don’t completely hate football, they hate the time it requires to watch all weekend and Monday nights. Remember that time away for that should get your girlfriend or wife some quality time another day of her choice, even if it is dinner and a chic flick.

I have collected a few terms to help you understand a few. They are put in terms I thought you may understand.

Offense Terms

Quarterback – This player calls the plays, throws passes or hands it off, and runs if necessary.

Running back – Responsible for running the ball to gain yards or to make a touchdown.

Wide Receiver – Responsible for running the ball or coming open to catch a pass togainyards or make a touchdown.

Center – This player snaps (hikes) the ball to the Quarterback to start the play.

Kicker/Punter – Kicks the ball to start the game, punt returns and kicks the ball for field goals.

Touchdown – The main object of the game, earns team 6 pts.

Field Goal – A place kick that passes through the middle of the field goal, earning team 3 points.

Extra Points – Can be earned after a touchdown by kicking the ball through the goal and earning 1 extra pt, or running the ball in for 2 points.

Fumble – When the runner with the ball loses the ball by either dropping it or having it knocked away. If the player regains possession of the ball, it is called a recovery.

Intentional Grounding – When the Quarterback throws away a pass to avoid a sack.

Sack – When the Quarterback is tackled before he gets rid of the ball.

Incomplete pass – When the ball touches the ground before being caught.

Defense Terms

Defense backs – Responsible for trying to keep the receiver from catching the pass

Defensive Ends – This player tries to sack the quarterback

Defensive Tackle – This player tries to stop the running back

Interception – When a defensive player catches the throw intended for the offensive team

Turnover – With a fumble or interception from the offense team, they gain possession of the ball.

There are four quarters in a game consisting of 15 minutes each. Half time is between the 2nd and 3rd quarter for 15 minutes except in the Super Bowl, then I believe it is 30 minutes. Time outs are 1 minute and 50 seconds unless it’s the last 2 minutes of the game, then its 30 seconds and each team gets 3 per Half. If the coach challenges a call and loses, that team also loses a time out.

Though I did not include all terms, you can familiarize yourself with terms if you really watch a game. I assure you that once you understand the terms and reasoning, you will see why it’s fun for your guy!
