Gaining My Footing

I am still on my semi-relaxing kick and on my recent trip to Ithaca, NY, I found myself working my way through the trees, shrubs, and flowers on rough trails that lead to beautiful waterfalls and perfect quiet. It’s interesting because I don’t live in a place with nice trails that challenge the body and quiet the mind. However, a nice pothole and a cracked sidewalk can provide a challenge especially if I am not in the practice of picking up my feet.

During my hike my feet were not steady and at times I had to get down on all fours to make it up or down a path that wasn’t so secure. However, the tree roots and jagged rocks provided me some comfort along with my walking companion who is a seasoned veteran of trail running and walking.

Once we arrived at our destination—a beautiful waterfall with a quiet pool of water beneath it—I started to feel my breath and footing steady. After we completed our hike I felt relaxed, focused, and most of all ready to get things done in a streamlined and focused way. When I am walking around a city thinking about all of the things I am trying to get done instead of focusing on remaining upright and feeling the ground under my feet I miss out on what is around me.

So now when I am walking through my neighborhood I pay attention to the trees, flowers, and sidewalk cracks because there is nothing like flailing, falling, and not knowing how you got there. By the way, according to the Mayo Clinic an hour of hiking burns at least 438 calories.
