ESPN Reporter Firing for Lin Headline Seems Extreme

So now that we’ve had a few days for the media hype to settle down, have you taken a moment to think about the ‘Chink in armor’ headline?   It seems like in today’s age of twitter, facebook and other social networks that can literally send information across the world in seconds, and so many people trying to ‘make noise to be noticed’, any of us who post content to the web need to be very mindful of what we say and do.

I have been called naive before but I have to say that I honestly did not think Max Bretos meant anything derogatory by his headline. I realize I might sound like a 67 year old white man from the foothills of West Virginia but I’m actually a 30-something Black woman who has seen her share of subtle and blatant racism in the media and taken offense.

I think Newsy put together a great video report on the topic. Watch it here…

I feel really bad for Bretos who lost his job over the use of poor word choice. He’s not the first at ESPN to make that mistake but I guess the spotlight was just shining too bright on the network and they felt compelled to act. Suspension was probably more appropriate.

What do you think?
