‘The Announcement’ Debuts on ESPN Tonight, Magic and Cookie Johnson Tell Their Story

I really can’t believe it was over 20 years ago when Magic announced he was infected with HIV. It was HUGE news back then because there were very few celebrities and certainly no professional athletes who had been diagnosed with HIV or AIDS and he was still playing strong.  There is a lot more information, education, awareness and treatment available on this horrible disease today than back then. Even though many of us understood by 1991 that it wasn’t ‘the kissing disease’, you couldn’t catch it by holding hands or playing a basketball game but some were still very ignorant to the facts. I remember some players didn’t want to play against Lakers if Magic was going to be on the court. Can you imagine what it must have been like for his wife Cookie?  Well, in this documentary, we finally get to hear in her own words what the experience was like to learn her husband had contracted HIV and for them to face the world with this announcement.

Check out the trailer:

To support Magic’s tireless effort to raise money for HIV/AIDS research for treatments and a cure, you can make a donation.  It airs again at 11pmET on ESPN2 but you can catch the schedule for future airings on the ESPN Films website.
