Augustus to Receive Key to City

Written by Karen Gros

A jersey retirement ceremony will be held Sunday, January 24, 2010 at 4:30 pm Central Standard Time at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on the Louisiana State University campus to officially retire the jersey of former Lady Tiger and WNBA Minnesota Lynx basketball star Seimone Augustus. The ceremony will be held prior to the tip off of the LSU-Tennessee ladies basketball game.

Augustus is a former Lady Tiger who was named the National Player of the Year twice. She also made All-American honors each year of her collegiate year at LSU and is the only player in LSU history to make the State Farm Coaches Association All-America honors for three years. Augustus wore jersey number 33 during her LSU career.

Here is what Augustus had to say about her jersey being retired today at a press conference at Walk-On’s, “It’s just an overwhelming experience. I never thought in a million years from when I came here through my four years at LSU that my jersey would be retired. We always walk in the gym and we see Pete Maravich, Shaquille O’Neal, and Bob Petitt’s jerseys up there. You just kind of look at it and admire it because of all the things that they’ve done, but you never would think that one day your jersey would be hanging up there. It’s just a great experience. It’s a great feeling to know that my jersey will be up there. It’s great for my family, my fans, and everyone who supported me throughout my time here, and just for the Lady Tigers. It gives them a goal, and it gives them a dream to one day have their jersey hung up there. Just for other female athletes here at LSU, it shows that it’s a possibility, it’s an opportunity that one day your jersey could be hanging up there as well.”

Augustus becomes the ninth player at LSU to have their jersey retired. She will join the ranks of Shaquille O’Neal, Pistol Pete Maravich, Bob Pettit, Skip Bertman, Rudy Macklin, Billy Cannon, Tommy Casanova, and Ben McDonald and have the only female jersey hanging from the rafters in the Pete Mac.

Normally a player has to wait five years after graduation to have a jersey retired, but the LSU Athletic Council waived the five year waiting period. Augustus graduated in 2006 and is a native of Baton Rouge, LA.

Seimone Augustus now plays in the WNBA with the Minnesota Lynx.

At one of the time-outs during the LSU game between the Tennessee Volunteers, Mayor Kip Holden will present a key to the city of Baton Rouge to Augustus.

This will be an exciting night in the Pete Mac, with a spectacular showdown between No. 12 LSU Lady Tigers and No. 4 Lady Tennessee Volunteers. Tipoff begins at 5:00 pm.

Tickets are still available for the game and cost $10.00 for prime seats, $8 for middle section seating and $6 for upper seats. Group tickets are also available and start at $2.00 each.

A special half-time performance by Quickchange will also be on the agenda. You can learn more about Quickchange by clicking here.

Fans are asked to wear gold shirts for the game to support the Lady Tigers. The first 2,000 people in the doors Sunday night will receive a free Simone Augustus mini banner to celebrate her jersey retirement.
